What is the H. Pylori Bacteria (helicobacter pylori?

The h. pylori bacteria is a spiral shaped, gram negative bacterium with 4-6 flagella attached (thread-like appendages). With it’s flagella, the bacterium drills into the mucus layer of the stomach. The bacterium excretes the enzyme urease, which converts urea into ammonia and bicarbonate. The release of ammonia lets the bacteria ‘neutralize’ the acidic environment in the stomach, which explains the difficulty in destroying the h. pylori bacterium. Normally the stomach’s acidity destroys bacteria all natural – but not the h. pylori bacterium! Ammonia is toxic to the epithelial cells and causes those cells to get damaged, hence the beginning of a stomach ulcer takes it’s course.

What symptoms can I experience if I have h. pylori?

The most common symptoms of an ulcer most likely caused by the h. pylori bacteria are pain, nausea, burning sensation. Severe symptoms of a bleeding stomach ulcer include blood taste in the mouth especially in the morning, tarry stools, extreme abdominal pain, vomiting, vomiting blood. A perforated ulcer in the GI Tract (gastro-intestinal tract) including the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, the small and large intestinal tract, can affect surrounding organs. When this happens, serious complications can follow, such as hemorrhaging that will require emergency treatment.

When was h. pylori discovered?

The h. pylori bacteria was discovered as early as 1875 by German Scientists who found a spiral shaped bacteria in the stomach lining of a human. The bacteria could not be grown in culture, so further study was soon abandoned. The h.pylori bacteria was re-discovered in 1982 by two Australian Scientists: Robin Warren
and Barry Marshall. They concluded that most stomach ulcers and gastritis are caused by colonization of the h. pylori bacteria.

How is h. pylori contracted and prevented?

  • contaminated food
  • contaminated water
  • poor sanitary conditions
  • food sensitivities
  • avoid consuming raw eggs
  • avoid milk products, as they tend to increase acid secretion
  • under-cooked meats (hamburgers)
  • drug side effects
  • always carefully wash fruits and vegetables before eating
  • wash your hands after the use of the toilet

Scientists used to believe that stomach ulcers are caused by stress. But research found that the h. pylori bacterium is responsible for causing ulcers. Naturally stress affects our body in many ways, and you should always look for creative ways to help eliminate stress in any shape and form. The h. pylori bacteria has been found in saliva, plaque and feces, which may suggest, gastro/oral or fecal/oral as possible transmission routes. The h. pylori bacteria is often contracted during childhood either via food or water that has been contaminated with fecal waste. Many gastro-intestinal disorders are diet related such as food sensitivities. Therefore identifying and eliminating ‘trigger foods’ can help provide significant relief to gastro-intestinal issues.

Maintaining basic sanitary conditions in your kitchen and while preparing foods can go a long way towards avoiding contracting the h. pylori bacterium. Wash all fruits and vegetables before consumption or cooking. Avoid consuming raw eggs and under-cooked meats, especially in ground form. Also poor sanitary conditions can contribute to contracting the h. pylori bacterium. It is therefore essential to wash your hands with soap after the use of the toilet to help avoid contracting the h. pylori bacterium and also to help the bacteria from spreading.

If you already have the h. pylori  bacteria, eliminate hot, spicy, irritating foods from your diet. Eat smaller meals for often in order for the stomach not to be empty for long periods of time. To learn more about the foods you should eat, please consult your local nutrition / dietitionist. Here is some basic information about the foods you should eat:

Eat about 1/3 of fruits, especially fruits high in Vitamin C. Eat about 2/3 raw and / or steamed vegetables, nuts, whole grains. Regular consumption of raw and steamed broccoli may help with fighting h. pylori A breakfast that is very soothing for your internal tract is: hot, cooked oats with walnuts, dates and a tablespoon of manuka honey. To keep your body well hydrated, drink 2-4 quarts of filtered water a day. Chamomile and peppermint tea are both soothing for the internal tract. Light meats include chicken and turkey or vegetarian ‘meats’  such as bocca burgers, turkey dogs. Also include fish in your diet such as salmon (omega 3 fatty acids), tilapia, mahi mahi.

Avoid or eliminate the use of alcohol and cigarettes. Smokers are twice as likely to develop ulcers than non-smokers, by providing a more favorable condition for the h. pylori bacteria. Also reduce or eliminate coffee, colas, sodas containing caffeine. Stress and ongoing stressful situations also seem to aggravate an ulcer. Stress seems to increase acid production. Stress can also increase blood pressure and anxiety, therefore causing favorable conditions for the ulcer to grow. Exercise of any kind is a great stress reliever, also increasing the secretion of the 'good mood hormone seratonin. If exercise is not your thing, try meditation and other stress-reducing strategies such as a walk outdoors in fresh air and sunshine.

Other factors that tend to cause ulcers are pepsin. Pepsin is released by the mucosa to help break down protein, and hydrochloric acid, an acid released by the digestive system. A  history of ulcers in the family can also be a reason for a greater likelihood of getting an ulcer due to hereditary tendencies. Also certain drug side effects can cause the mucosa to break, thus causing the beginning of an ulcer.

How can I have myself tested to find out if I have the h. pylori bacteria?

  • Your doctor can order a blood test which will determine whether the h. pylori bacteria was or is present, due to the existence of antibodies found in the blood test.

  • The urea breath test can determine if you are suffering from the h. pylori bacterium. The h. pylori bacteria has the ability to break down urea, a chemical made of nitrogen and carbon. These chemicals are normally produced by the body and excreted in the urine.

  • The stool antigen test is another approach to look for evidence of the h. pylori bacterium in a stool sample.

  • The most invasive test is done by extracting a tissue sample of the stomach and examining it under the microscope for the h. pylori bacterium. The sample is collected by conducting an exam with an endoscope.

Do antibiotics cure h. pylori? What about the side effects?

Antibiotics may seem to work for a while, but you will notice that they have a tendency to becoming less and less effective in the pursuit to curing the h. pylori bacterium. Antibiotic resistance is the ability of a microorganism to withstand the effects of an antibiotic! If a bacterium carries several resistant genes, it is
called multi-resistant or ‘superbug’. Bacteria which have a mutation allowing them to survive, will live on to reproduce. They will then pass this trait to their off-spring, which will be a fully resistant generation. Once people realize that the effect of antibiotics has worn off, they tend to look for a natural h. pylori remedy online.

A typical doctor prescribed treatment to help destroy the h. pylori bacterium is called a Triple Therapy. A triple therapy includes:

  • A Proton Pump Inhibitor. Proton Pump Inhibitors or PPI drugs block the action of the cells in the stomach lining that pump hydrogen needed to produce stomach acid, therefore shutting off acid production and giving the ulcer a chance to heal.

  • Amoxicillin (antibiotic)

  • Clarithromycin (antibiotic)

When this regimen is carefully followed according to your doctors orders, you may experience a 90-95 % chance of success. This always seems to leave that last 5-10% that just won't quite eradicate the h. pylori bacteria, thus preventing the next episode, the gradual and full return of the h. pylori bacteria. Not to mention the sometimes strong side effects of antibiotics such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, migrain headaches, yeast infections, dehydration.

In order to treat the h. pylori bacteria, one must reduce the acid production in the stomach and eradicate the h. pylori bacteria. When this is achieved, one can help avoid the regular reoccurrence of the h. pylori bacteria and forming of stomach ulcers and other gastro intestinal ulcers.

Is Active Manuka Honey a natural cure for h. pylori?

According to Dr. Molan's Research for over 20 years, active manuka honey seems to naturally and effectively destroy staph, strep and h. pylori, the bacteria known to cause stomach ulcers and other gastro intestinal tract ulcers. Active Manuka Honey is all natural and may become THE cure for stomach ulcer sufferers world-wide, including Acid Reflux, Heartburn, Esophagus Ulcer, up-set Stomach, Stomach Ulcer, Gastritis, Duodenal Ulcer, Diverticulitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. There are no known side effects, unless you are allergic to honey itself.

If you are diabetic, you will need to ask your doctor as to amount of active manuka honey you could have to still be effective to help destroy the h. pylori bacteria. Maybe your doctor will allow you to take 3 x half a teaspoon a day?. Active manuka honey can be taken side by side with acid reducing drugs. Do not take the honey and the acid reducing drugs at the same time.

If you are tested positive for the h. pylori bacteria, you will need to take 3x1 teaspoon of Active Manuka Honey on a small piece of bread (square inch size), 20 min. before meals. Do NOT drink any liquids during those 20 min. in order to keep the honey as concentrated as possible. You can take a 4th teaspoon before going to bed, to coat your stomach while sleeping.

You will need to take active manuka honey for 6 months, to hopefully totally eradicate the h. pylori bacterium. You can have yourself re-tested for h. pylori after 3 months, and hopefully watch the h. pylori count come down. After 6 months, hopefully the h. pylori result with turn up negative, as it has for many of our customers. For encouraging reports about the effectiveness of active manuka honey destroying h. pylori, please read our Customer Testimonies.

What is Active Manuka Honey?

Active Manuka Honey, is harvested from the flower of the wild, un-cultivated Tea Tree Bush (called leptospermum scoparium) in New Zealand. The bees are placed in the middle of wild tea tree bushes to collect this precious, medicinal honey. The honey is then very carefully extracted from the comb in a process called 'cold slung'. The honey is 'swung cold' out of the comb, after carefully scrapping off the comb capings. The comb capings keep the honey inside the comb. Active Manuka Honey has been used by New Zealand's Aboriginal people for centuries for both stomach as well as wound healing purposes. Active Manuka Honey has been researched over 20 years by Dr. Molan, Senior Lecturer, Biochemistry Department at the Waikato University in New Zealand. Dr. Molan has found that Active Manuka Honey seems to naturally destroy staph, strep as well as the h. pylori bacterium (helicobacter pylori).

Has Active Manuka Honey been researched?

Active Manuka Honey has been researched by Dr. Peter Molan, Senior Lecturer of the Waikato University, New Zealand for over 20 years. Dr. Molan has found that Active Manuka Honey seems to naturally destroy staphaureus, streptococcus (even antibiotic resistant MRSA, Golden Staph), as well as h. pylori (helicobacter pylori), the bacteria typically associated to stomach ulcers. For more information about Dr. Molan's Reserach work, please visit the website of the Waikato University.

The non-peroxide (UMF activity) in Active Manuka Honey has been described by Molan and Russell (1998) and Allen (1991). The non-peroxide antibacterial activity in honey is important for wound care uses, since the factor is not reduced by catalyses activity in tissues or blood (Cooper 1999).

Active Manuka Honey has been shown in laboratory studies to have antibacterial activity against the 7 most common species of bacteria found in wounds. 58 strains of Staphylococcus Aureus isolated from infected wounds showed complete inhibition at concentrations of 2-3% Active Manuka Honey. The effect was caused by factors in addition to the sugar in the honey (Cooper 1999). Methicillin-Resistant Staph Auereus (MRSA) strains have also been tested against Active Manuka Honey, with complete inhibition shown at 10% honey concentration (Molan 1996).

Active Manuka Honey also inhibits the growth of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) at about half the concentration of clover honey with hydrogen peroxide activity (Allen 2000). Honey, including Active Manuka Honey, has shown the prevent the growth of Pseudomonas spp. found on the surface of a wound, even if the honey was diluted 10 fold by exudation from the tissue (Cooper and Molan 1996).

In addition to the antimicrobial activity present in honey, honey enhances wound healing by a variety of other means. (Molan 1998/1999, Subrahmanyam 1991). These include

a) providing a moist, but sterile environment for tissue re-growth which
enhances tissue formation and reduces tissue deformity

b) eliminating tissue damage caused by the use of standard antibiotics

c) the osmotic effect pulling up serum from the body into the wound

d) the osmotic effect absorbing pus from the wound

e) providing glucose used by white blood cells to create the 'respiratory
    burst' needed to destroy bacteria

f) providing a natural barrier between the wound and the dressing, which
protects new cell growth tissue from being torn away when the dressing is
changed, providing a painless wound dressing change

g) providing acidification of the wound, which has been shown to stimulate healing, by creating an anti-inflammatory effect through the reduction in the number of inflammatory cells in wound tissue (honey has antioxidant properties) providing wound bacteria with nutrients instead of amino acids, thus encouraging the bacteria to produce lactic acid instead of ammonia (the chemical associated with odor in skin ulcers).

Dr. Peter Molan (1998) has carried out comprehensive review of case studies, animal studies and randomized clinical trials, where honey was used to treat wounds, burns and skin ulcers. Dunford (2000) has presented case studies describing the use of Active Manuka Honey in the treatment of wound and chronically infected lesions, including a case where massive skin lesions and necrosis resulting from meningococcal septicemia not responding to conventional treatment, healed completely within 10 weeks of the start of Active Manuka Honey treatment (Dunford 2000).

What does the UMF Rating mean in Active Manuka Honey?

UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor. The UMF number is a standard way of describing the anti-bacterial strength of Active Manuka Honey. The honey is put in a plate with a bacterial culture, and the area is measured where the bacterial growth is stopped. This area is compared to a similar area produced by a solution of phenol and water. The UMF number refers to the percentage of phenol in the water. So Active Manuka Honey is honey that has the same anti-bacterial strength as 10% phenol. Active Manuka Honey has very powerful antibacterial activity. It can destroy staphaureus bacteria even when it is diluted to only 1.8% honey concentration in water. It has also been shown to effectively destroy Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus,  MRSA (also called the Golden Staph or "Super Bug") at 10% honey concentration).

Are there any side-effects to Active Manuka Honey?

There are no known side effects to Active Manuka Honey when used internally, unless you are allergic to honey itself. Occasionally, when Active Manuka Honey is used on an external wound, it can burn and sting for a while, because of it's high activity level. If the burning and stinging persists after 5-10 minutes, the Active Manuka Honey must be removed from the wound and can be replaced with Regular Manuka Honey. The Regular Manuka Honey should not burn and sting at all when applied to a wound and can still be quite effective in helping the wound heal all natural.

How Active Manuka Honey led to a Negative H. Pylori Result...

I felt like I had to yawn all the time, so I went to my doctor for the regular check-up. I told my doctor about the frequent yawning. My doctor had me tested for h. pylori, which tested positive. This was in December, 2 years ago. My doctor prescribed me a very strong antibiotic for about 2 weeks, but it made me quite sick because it was so strong. After 6 months I was re-tested for h. pylori. The h. pylori count did come down some, but it still tested positive.
My husband received a laptop for Christmas. I asked him to research h. pylori. He found the website of Manuka Honey Body Products. I ordered the Active Manuka Honey and took 4 teaspoons a day. I was also taking Aciphex at the time, and found that it was too much together with the manuka honey, so I reduced the amount of Active Manuka Honey to 2 teaspoons a day and still found it effective. I had myself retested after 9 months and the h.pylori result came back NEGATIVE.

Customer Testimony "How Active Manuka Honey helped with Acid Reflux
and H. Pylori"

I was so surprised that the active manuka honey worked for me. I thought I will try this stuff, but I really don't believe it will work for me. I used it faithfully for a week and my acid reflux and h. pylori infection was getting considerably better. Unfortunately for me, I developed an allergy to it. I have problems with allergies anyway. I had to stop taking it, but I just wanted you to know, that I am truly amazed with the honey. I really thought, it was a money thing that wouldn't work, but it certainly did. It did help me enough that I don't have the bad pressure in the top part of my stomach now and the other problems I had with the h. pylori have dissipated also. I will still try to take a little of it once in a while and hope it will keep me feeling alright without a lot of allergic problems. Thank you so much for active manuka honey. It works !!!!
